Challenges to the European Tooling Industry

Dear Reader

The European tooling industry, although still holding its own in sales, is rapidly losing ground in the manufacturing sector to low production cost countries. Our tool making industries are concerned about their competitiveness in terms of added value per employee per hour. Special tooling, together with precision machining and micro tooling, holds a key position in the plastic and metal processing value chain. These industrial sectors are of strategic importance for sustaining the growth of the European economy. Industries, such as automotive, packaging, aeronautics, biotechnology, medical, etc., have exacting requirements in terms of cost (est. 30% reduction), time to market (est. 40% reduction) and product quality. Europe must gain and secure the world-wide leadership and competitiveness in tool making, by

applying unique and innovative technologies,
adopting new business models,
optimising education and training standards.

The aim of EuroTooling 21 is to generate a distinct advantage in knowledge, production technology and supply chain collaboration. As such, it will assist the industry to shift from a resource based towards a more knowledge based sector.

33 partners from ten EU member states, with complementary knowledge and expertise, have joined forces to achieve this goal. As the tooling industry is typically SME-dominated, the objec-tive is to support the evolution towards high-tech SMEs, and to reinforce and integrate competitiveness, innovation and sustainability. Furthermore, it is intended to enhance the awareness and capability to research and development. The aim of this brochure is to provide you with an overview of EuroTooling 21. In addition, you will find information about further training and cooperation with us, in the chapter titled. Sharing Information. (page 12). Our goals will not be achieved, until we have helped you implement the results of our work in your company.
